Bellerive Oval- Hobart, Australia
The second match of the New Year will feature Melbourne Stars taking on the Hobart Hurricanes and the match will take place at the Bellerive Oval. This is the first match of the double-header on Saturday with the second match taking place between the Brisbane Heat and the Sydney Sixers at the Gabba. The Melbourne Stars slipped up in the race for the top four with a heavy loss to the Sydney Sixers while Hobart Hurricanes showed their mettle with a one-run win against the Brisbane Heat in a classic Big Bash League encounter at The Gabba. The Hobart Hurricanes are currently in third position while the Melbourne Stars are in the fifth spot with 10 points.
A win for either team will make the race for the playoffs very interesting. Only three points separate the top four sides but the introduction of the new rules has meant that a team losing the contest, with an exception of a massive loss, still remains in contention. The Big Bash League points table could be shaken up after the end of the double headers on Saturday and Sunday.
Pitch Report and Conditions & Toss Prediction:
Bellerive Oval, Hobart has a small park and the short boundaries around the square offer batsmen plenty of opportunities to free their arms. Fast bowlers do get early movement off the surface at this venue but spinners have always had a tough time here as the dimensions of the ground make it quite a difficult venue for them.
There are predictions of cloudy skies over Hobart on January 02 and the conditions would slightly favor the bowlers. Still batting would be easy on the surface as the ball comes on to the bat nicely and allows batsmen to play on the up here. The side batting first would need to eye a total in the range of 180 runs to feel safe here.
We have seen massive scores being put up at Hobart this season and teams have won by big margins. It is a very good surface to bat on and allows the batsmen to play their strokes easily. Thus we believe the side that wins the toss would like to take advantage from the surface by opting to bat first in the game.

But there are still few problems with the bat for the side as we haven’t seen their batsmen play to their full potential yet. Melbourne Stars come here with back to back losses and they would be under tremendous pressure to perform. The side has got good firepower with the bat and on a small outfield they would start slightly ahead of the Hurricanes. Bet on Melbourne Stars to win.
