Big Bash League History and Winners of All 9 Seasons

The Big Bash League is an Australian professional franchise Twenty20 cricket league, which was begun in 2011 by Cricket Australia. The Big Bash League took place of the previous title, the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, and features eight city-based franchises rather than the six state teams which had participated earlier. The competition has been sponsored by fast food chicken outlet KFC since its inception. It is one of the two T20 cricket leagues, alongside the Indian Premier League, to feature amongst the top ten domestic sport leagues in average attendance. 

The first season of big bash league was 2011-2012. Till now, nine seasons of big bash league have been concluded successfully. From 10 December, season ten is about to begin. Fans, players and viewers are excited for this upcoming season, and no one can anticipate who will win the big bash league title.  Eight teams, Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder will be playing in a round-robin method in the league stage from December 10 to January 26.

 The top 5 teams of the points table will qualify to the playoffs, and there are 5 matches starting on January 29 with the final to be held on February 6. Six stadiums have been selected till now, while the grounds of the fixtures post December 31 are yet to be finalized.

 The Perth Scorchers is the most successful BBL side with 3 titles under their belt. They are followed by the Sydney Sixers, who won for the second time by beating the Melbourne Stars by 19 runs in the final of BBL 2019-20.

Big Bash League Season 1 (2011-12) Winner: Sydney Sixers

The first season of the tournament was a thrilling one with Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers meeting in the final. Perth Scorchers scored 156 for the loss of 5 wickets on board. Mitchell Marsh scored an outstanding knock of 77. In the second innings, Sydney Sixers chased the target with 1 over left and won the first season of the league. Moises Henriques was named the man of the match for his sparkling 77 runs of just 41 balls. The player of the tournament was David Hussey.

The final of the season 2 was this time between Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat. Brisbane Heat batted first and set a challenging target of 168 for Perth Scorchers. Joe Burns banged with 43 of 27 balls. They conquered the Perth Scorchers by 34 runs. Kemar Roach was the highest wicket-taker for them with 3 wickets but Nathon Lyon was named man of the match for his economical spell. Aaron Finch was awarded the player of the tournament this time.

After two consecutive defeats in the finals of the first two seasons, the Perth Scorchers won the title this time against Hobart Hurricanes. Batting first, they set a mammoth target of 191 runs. Shaun Marsh was the highest scorer with a quick 63. The Hobart Hurricanes could only manage to reach the score of 152 runs in their respective 20 overs. Brad Hogg grabbed 3 wickets off just 17 runs and was rightfully tagged man of the match while Ben Dunk was awarded man of the tournament.

Perth Scorchers won the tournament for the second time straight. This time it was against the Sydney Sixers. Sydney Sixers batted first and scored a skimpy 147 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. In retaliation, Perth Scorchers successfully reached the target in the last ball of the last over. Shaun Marsh was declared man of the match for his innings of 77. Jacques Kallis was tagged the player of the tournament.

Sydney Thunder reached the score with three balls left. Usman Khawaja was tagged man of the match for his bold 70 runs innings. Chris Lynn was awarded player of the tournament for the 5th season.

The Perth Scorchers secured their third championship this season. They stopped the Sydney Sixers to a meagre score of 141 for 9 bowling first. They reached the target easily with 4 overs left. Michael Klinger played a match winning innings of 71 runs. For his 3 wickets in the first innings, Jhye Richerdson was named man of the match. For the second time straight, Chris Lynn was awarded man of the tournament.

Big Bash League Season 7 (2017-18) Winner: Adelaide Strikers

After winning the toss on the final day, Adelaide set a huge target of 202 for the loss of 2 wickets. Jake Weatherald scored a stunning century (115) of 70 balls. The Hurricanes can only score 177 in their chase. Jake Weatherald was named man of the match without any question while D’Arcy Short was man of the tournament for his batting masterclass.

Big Bash League Season 8 (2018-19) Winner: Melbourne Renegades

It was the Melbourne Stars’ game to lose after they held the Melbourne Renegades to 5/145 and put on 93 runs for the first wicket, but T20 cricket is a fitful game. Five wickets in four overs ruined the Melbourne Stars’ momentum as the Renegades completed a stunning comeback to claim their maiden title.

Man of the match was named veteran allrounder Dan Christian, who hit an unbeaten 38 and followed up with the critical wickets of Seb Gotch and Dwayne Bravo. Melbourne Renegades’ quick Kane Richardson topped the BBL bowling charts with 24 wickets at 17.70, while D’Arcy Short retained both the batting title and Player of the Tournament honours with 637 runs at 67.62.

It was pouring down there again as the Sixers lifted the trophy. Winners in 2012 and now again in 2020, while the wait for kudos continues for Melbourne Stars.
