Big Bash League, 2019-20 also known as BBL 09, kicks off with its ninth season this December. It is the professional domestic T20 men’s cricket tournament in Australia. BBL tournament comprises of 8 teams across six cities in Australia. 

There will be 61 matches played in the BBL this season, the highest no. of matches in its entire history. It is because of the introduction of a new BBL playoff format that includes matches like Eliminator, Qualifier, Knockout, Challenger, and the Final. Unlike previous seasons, the team finishing at 5th in the points table will also get a chance to play in the BBL playoffs. In the regular season of BBL, the Double round-robin format that includes home and away matches stays just like previous seasons.

A BBL team can now sign a maximum of 6 overseas players, this number has been increased from 4 overseas players in past seasons. Although there can still be a maximum of 2 overseas players included in the playing 11 just like previously. Also, there is a new rule being introduced for the super over too. If the super over gets tied, then it will be replayed until there is a definitive winner in the match. The toss will continue to be conducted with a bat flip just like last year, the visiting captain gets to choose either hills or flats.

Defending champions of Big Bash League is Melbourne Renegades. They won the final last year against their arch-rivals Melbourne Stars by 13 runs at Docklands Stadium, Melbourne. The first match of BBL 09 is scheduled between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder on 17th December 2019. The venue of the match is at The Gabba in Brisbane.
