In a webinar, this wednesday about “How the sporting fraternity is gearing up to post lockdown?” with the Twenty First Century Media, the BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri discussed the prospect of the season 13th of the IPL. He said that “The BCCI remains optimistic about IPL taking place after the Indian monsoons subject to the clearance from the federal government”. Previously, the IPL 2020 was postponed indefinitely by the BCCI due to the COVID-19 pandemic enforced lockdown in the entire world. The Indian government extended the lockdown to 31 May in the country while allowing the sporting facilities and stadiums to re-open without any crowd gathering.
According to the BCCI chief executive, cricket can only happen around the end of September at the earliest as he mentioned that, “The lockdown is there till May 31 and then we have the monsoon season. Cricketing activities in earnest can start only after monsoon. Hopefully things will improve and that can give us more variables which we can control and accordingly take a decision”.
With that, there is a question mark on when the sporting events would be safe to return in its glory. Hence the statement of Rahul Johri about the chances of IPL happening later this year is quite true. He clearly stated that, “The safety of every individual is of paramount importance and every individual has the right to decide on their safety and one should respect that". It underlines the fact that BCCI is very concerned about the well-being of every stakeholder involved in the IPL especially the players.
Although for the fans, it is too early to get excited for the IPL happening anytime soon. This is because the BCCI chief executive said that, "Our approach is to keep watching the situation. We are going to be guided by the Government of India in its entirety, whatever are the government guidelines is what we'll follow. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves on anything and that is why if you've seen the BCCI advisory, it says cricket is suspended till further notice. And we are engaging with various agencies on a continuous basis". In all, BCCI has adopted the wait and watch approach for the IPL.
